Match Report: JECC vs Hightstown @ Far Hills - 06/14/2015

Match Report
by Ravi Suri

JECC lost to Hightstown. Batting first, Hightstown were 204/4 in 40.0 overs. JECC got all out for 178 in 37.1 overs.

Man of the Match: Sid (66runs) & Dilip (65 runs)

HCC vs JECC historically produced good fighting cricket and this game was no different. We knew HCC was a good team with a blend of very competitive batting and bowling departments augmented with attacking brand of cricket they play. We had to be our best to beat them. We started off losing the toss and were asked to field first.

Bowling: We had the worse off the temperature for the day while we fielded. It was very hot humid and energy sapping. Venki continued to bowl well as did Sid. The first 3 overs were quiet and a quick lesson to learn from HCC openers, they waited till they got their eye in and did not get desperate during the slow phase. Fact they batted first and not chasing a big target helped, but that notwithstanding they showed right amount of patience. Shubo was lucky to survive a caught behind he certainly edged one, he was dropped by Dilip who did everything right in terms of moving towards the ball correctly and had both hands go for the catch.

On this topic let me make 2 suggestions, one don’t change the second slip fielder based on an odd catch dropped. Be it Dilip or whoever is at second slip let that person be persisted with. Ananth is a fixture at 1st slip which is perfect, he is our best. The second slip should also be a person who gets used to slip catching. A wicket keeper like Dilip is fine his basics were right in the dropped catch. The second suggestion is Dilip in particular stands too close and at times insists on others to get too close in the slips. Parallax error makes one feel that slip fielders are too deep when you see them from bowling positions or mid-off positions. The issue with standing too close is you don’t enough time to judge and react. I agree it has a down side that some catches don’t carry, therefore this becomes a balancing act between catches which don’t carry and the ones which come too quickly to you and you don’t react. Dhanu got out to one which landed comfortably in slip fielders hands, vs Dilip dropping one which would have been caught had he been 2 steps back. You can always argue what if the catch dint carry. I am playing the % situation here. How many times did we see a ball from Sid in particular drop short of the slips? By the way it also depends on the wicket, a matting wicket with low bounce my theory would be different.

Anyways let’s move on to the game; Shubu made most of his luck and started to play aggressively and slowly HCC built a run rate of 3.5 by drinks interval for no loss. This was similar to the start Dhanu and I gave against SGCC Jr. If such a platform is built the batting team is always on the front foot and the bowlers are up against it. When wickets don’t fall the wides and some lose bowling comes into play. I would say this game HCC batters made our bowling look below par, while in reality we dint bowl as badly. Shubo was out to a very good catch by Venki but by then HCC was well on to a good score. Dilip came into bowl and was extremely unlucky in being a denied a PLUMB LBW; and two more which I would say were 60-40. LBW’s against leg spin bowling is a debatable issue; Shane Warne and Anil Kumble are prime examples. On impact these look plumb but the issue is away going ball as against an incoming ball. Leg spin is like outswing the ball is going away and psychologically it is missing the stumps. Off spin is in coming ball and it appears to hit the stumps. By the same yardstick to me Ananth was not out, Left arm spin away going ball. Herein lies a mind game with umpires. Some feel the pressure from a captain like Dilip and don’t want to rub him on wrong side, while some feel “let me take this bull by the horn”. You win some and you lose some that’s how life goes.

Ranvir came one drop and built a lovely innings. He showed you don’t always have to clear the boundaries to score big. Deft singles and doubles are equally good. The other opener Jigar also played very sensibly. Ananth bowled a brilliant spell. He is getting better every game and the control he showed in this game was incredible. His height and good action will always help. Once Ananth develops confidence he is a full time off spinner and builds the required muscle memory he will be a huge asset. Dilip-Ananth spin is a very big PLUS for us this season. I see Dilip bowling genuine googlies now, earlier these used by faster ones in variation but now they are turning in. This spin duo is getting better by the game.

Bhanu inflected a run out which was the best piece of fielding I have seen in a long long time. Robin Rana smashed a ball to mid-wicket, Bhanu ran in dived and almost took a blinder, but in the momentum dropped the catch. When a catch like that is dropped a fielder would normally lose a few seconds in disappointment. Particularly when it would have been a stupendous catch. Instead Bhanu recovered and threw to bowler end a “BULLET THROW” and got the batsman run out. Anuj came in and played very aggressively to increase an already impressive scoring rate. I don’t think we bowled that badly or fielded that badly; it was more of very good batting display which made us give 204 runs. I still feel very confident and good about our bowling. The wides are coming down by the game. Ananth – Dilip combo is a HUGE plus. Fielding can improve, in Dinesh- Bhanu – Chinmay we have terrific outfielders. I would like to see Chinmay more in the outfield as against in field. He has very good hands, terrific throw and moves fast.

Batting: I would take a HUGE blame for the irresponsible shot which got me out and put the team on the back foot. On Saturday I played a wining knock and either it was over confidence or lack of commitment, but I played mindlessly yesterday. In fact an earlier shot I attempted was equally bad and escaped being bowled. Dhanu gave me a look of caution; I did not take that advice and paid a big price. I am embarrassed and ashamed of that batting display and apologize to the team and captain. When you chase 204 you need a good start, I am sure my bad shot impacted Dhanu too as that’s bound to happen. Ananth replaced me and started to re build, unfortunately we lost Dhanu very soon and were 6 for 2 in no time.

Sid joined Ananth and the two of them brought us back in the game with sensible batting. They showed that if you stay at the wicket runs would come and run rate would not be a problem. By drinks we were 48 for 2 which was about the score HCC had at same time but for no loss of wickets. Dilip a positive captain commented we were on par at the drinks break. Sid was looking very good and Ananth was also showing his form of the season. Immediately after drinks we lost Ananth to an LBW which to me dint look out, particularly given the bar the umpire set when we were fielding.

Ananth is too good a person and a gentleman who does not believe is showmanship. The situation called for a “Geoffrey Boycott”  show of indicating ball was too high or imply to umpires and fielders “oh common are you nuts for appealing” instead Ananth played the perfect gentleman and left it to umpire who lifted his finger. More about umpiring in a bit. Chinmay replaced Ananth and whenever he bats Chin looks the most assured of our batsmen. In this great game of cricket you need the rub of the green to be able to score consistently. Chin is not having much of that these days, one mistake and he gets out, catches get dropped, umpires don’t give him 50-50 decisions, some shit is always on and he gets the dirty end of the luck. Suggest he does some pooja in the form of taking his team mates out for a drink and food and prays to the LIQUIDS to help him out. Dilip joined Sid and the two of them went on to play one of the best batting partnerships I have seen for JECC.

I have a confession to make; either I dint see Dilip’s batting abilities earlier or I under estimated his prowess. I saw glimpses of his skills against Middlesex and Piscataway, but what I saw of him yesterday blew me a bit. I know my cricket well, or let me say I know it very well. I can see the abilities of a player particularly well. I saw in Dilip a bowler of tremendous abilities, a captain who is pretty good at what he does, but I did not see the batsman in him. I commented in my previous report that Dilip is calmest when he is at batting crease. Most other times he is on the verge of exploding. Give him a bat and a tough situation he is very calm as we saw against Crescent, against Piscataway and Middlesex. Yesterday Dilip showed us a range of shots and more importantly shot selection I have not seen before. Amazing aspect was his stamina. On a hot and humid day after bowling an 8 over spell, he bats about 25 overs, scores 66 runs and partners with Sid in getting 100 plus for the team. I dint see him pant or gasp for breath, he ran well between wickets and SOAKED in the pressure. Hats off Dilip for a brilliant display.

Sid at other end lived up to his true potential. Batting with a sense of ease and correct technique Sid blended the aggression with caution approach perfectly. From a very far-fetched hope of winning the game, this pair got us within striking distance of pulling off a tremendous win. The score card will show Sid got 66, Dilip got 65, Ananth 22 and the next highest score was 6. Goes to show how much pressure and how determined Dilip-Sid were. Sid hit some glorious pulls for 3 sixes, Dilip pulled and drove brilliantly. Sid cut, drove to covers and mid-off with style. Between them they gave the shivers to HCC, Sid was finally out to a catch on the line, at mid-wicket boundary. This game runs on thin lines and when two competing teams play catches win matches.

We bowled more wides than them and dropped more catches than them. After Sid got out we lost 4 wickets for 3 runs and that left Dilip stranded and nowhere to go. It was sad to see an innings of that maturity and temperament go winless. While we dint win the game Dilip-Sid you made us proud and played brilliantly. The technique, temperament and class you displayed against very good bowling won you RESPECT from both the teams. Earning respect is not easy as egos and passions come in the way. But you guys did win the RESPECT of everyone at the ground. Well done BOYS!!

Umpiring: Steve Buckner was one of those umpires along with Darrell Hair who seemed to wear a HAT which stunk of authority. Respect is something which you should COMMAND from performance as against DEMAND from being in a POSITION. The umpire yesterday was too keen to show his authority on the game and “SHOW OFF” his position. I dint have as much problem with his decisions as his STUPIDITY in trying to interfere at every stage. I liked the fact that he kept track of the score, I liked his setting the bench mark on time and getting the game started soon and showing I am the boss here. Upto there it was fine, but telling the batsmen about field changes, asking the bowler whether he bowled leg or off spin and behaving like a dictator was going crazy. When you get involved with things you have nothing to do with, then your focus is off the primary tasks you are supposed to be working on.

On umpiring issues I am generally in agreement with Ananth’s way of playing this game. LBW decisions are extremely debatable and subjective. I am fine as long as umpire is consistent. But to give wides just because you are pissed off at appeals is not being JUST to the fielding team. We did appeal for some decisions which had no chance of being out, but that stemmed from being denied a clear caught behind. A close look at score card shows umpire was clearly favoring HCC with wides and marginal LBW’s. I am not going to say for a moment we lost this game to bad umpiring. It’s a fact we lost to the team which played better and fought better. Nobody from HCC played a reckless shot like I did, their bowler’s mere more disciplined and their batting like up took responsibility. In our case only Dilip-Sid and Ananth put their hands up in batting. Chin was unlucky I will not fault the shot. Dhanu would have been pissed off with my shot that can happen when your opening partner lets you and team down. But bottom line is only 3 of our batsmen showed up as against HCC in whose case every batsman who turned up at the crease contributed.
End of the day this was a loss I can take, we fought well, would have been great to pull a win. I see lot of positives from this game. Dinesh has lot of potential as a bowler. He needs to bowl more, would like to see him first change as he has pace and new ball will help. Look forward to games ahead.

Naga: this is just a bad phase of batting, don’t let this upset you. All of us go through such phases. Get to nets, I will come whenever you are ready. Recollect the good days of batting you had in the past. Yesterday run rate and game situation was not suited to your way of batting. Don’t let that upset you. In this game all 11 players don’t click on same day and that’s why it is a team sport. We need to back the players in a bad phase and encourage the ones in a good zone. Your keeping is a big PLUS for the team, your experience and team spirit are most needed. We focus a lot on stretching catch practice etc. Believe me just as important if not more is having throw-downs or what was called Knocking many years back. This gets batsmen to feel good and feel bat on ball. Bowlers too should have a feel balls bowled at the keeper and loosen up. I notice we are coming to ground in time and therefore can utilize the time better. You will notice a BIG change when this is put into practice. Every time you listen to Wasim Akram on commentary he says bowlers should bowl a few balls as if they are bowling in a match during warm up drills.
Look fwd to seeing Naga bright and ready at next game.

Match Report: JECC vs SGCC Jr @ Far hills, 06/07/2015

Match Report
by
Ravi Suri

JECC won by 64 runs.
Batting first, JECC scored:223/6 in 40.0 overs and SGCC Junior were all out for 159 in 38 overs.

Between two Sundays this great game of cricket can take you from depths of despair to heights of ecstasy. Last Monday I was depressed and had to drag myself to the desktop to pen / key in the match report. Today I was waiting for first rays of daylight to get up with the enthusiasm of a school kid with new toys wanting to show off to his brethren. That’s why we love this game so much, the drama, the intrigue, the ebbs and flow of a cricket match are exhilarating.

Man of the Match: Dhanushka (43 runs, 2 wkts); Ananth (61 runs)

It was a fabulous day for cricket, temperature was perfect, bright and sunny with perfect visibility. It was just the day you wish and pray your skipper wins the toss and opts to bat. So it was with Chinmay winning the toss and we opted to bat first.

Batting: This was a very important game for the openers in particular. Dhanu and I hardly put on a partnership worth its time. This was our sixth game, and up until now as a team we did not cross double digits before our first wicket fell. We were both extremely determined as our cricketing pride was at stake. The anxiety almost got the better off us as I played across the line and survived an LBW shout, then Dhanu called me for a non-existent run, I escaped thanks to a bad throw. After these initial jitters we started to settle down and Dhanu was very soon into his stride.

When Dhanu plays the lofted shots to cover you know he is in flow. When the bowler pitched up Dhanu drove, when the length was short, he pulled or cut, one pull to square leg for six was a standout shot. I took a longer time to get going, but Dhanu’s scoring rate ensured there was no pressure on me. I decided to rotate strike and we took some well calculated singles. Most often if you respond in time the most difficult runs look easy in the end. There was a phase when we hardly called, we made eye contact and ran that’s the level of understanding we both have built over past 2 to 3 years of batting together. I just about started to middle the ball with a cut to point which made me feel settled. On the brink of drinks I was out LBW and were 62 for 1 from 14 overs. Given our outfield and past failures of openers this was a sweet moment to be at drinks.

Ananth replaced me and quickly showed his class and the groove he is in this season. Ananth is in his prime batting form. From what all the cricket gurus say, Ananth should make most of this rich vein and view every batting opportunity as a “Buffet Spread” and not miss out on any item while his digestive systems are in full flow. While the lofted cover drive is the key dish of the buffet for Ananth, the rest of the spread on the buffet table was not missed out by Ananth. He gorged on the cut shot, every time he played it to deep point those of us watching would scream out “how did he do that”, and that too of an off spinner who does not provide any pace. When a batsman draws admiration from his team mates and the questions pops “how was that done” it says a lot about special cricketing prowess.

Ananth / Dhanu combination is very dangerous for the opponents. Both of them score quickly. If they bat together for 10 to 15 overs you can be rest assured the game is getting away from the opponent. Dhanu was determined to make up for past low scores, Ananth was keen to pile the runs, they both ran very well between wickets. Again on the stroke of a drinks break we lost Dhanu caught in covers. Avi replaced Dhanu, I went out to get lunch for the team and missed on some delightful batting from Sid / Chinmay. As they say in hindi “Sone pe Suhaga” Sid-Chinmay replacing the combo of Dhanu / Ananth must have been a batting treat. I believe after Ananth and Avi got out, Sid-Chin duo got together and played some fabulous cricket. I gather a six from Chin was the shot of the day, lofted to long off region, I heard Sid pulled one to square leg which was effortless and had the ball sailing into the dugout where we sit. By the time I came back Sid was still batting and were 194 for 4 with 3 overs to go. What a sea change from 76 all out last game. I wish we were allowed to trade 30 runs from this game for 3 runs of last game. Chinmay continued to bash the ball after Sid got out, Naga and Venky chipped in and we finished with 223 a huge score on our grass laden outfield.

Chinmay is batting beautifully this season, his timing is special as was seen in earlier games and I believe he was at his best yesterday. When a batsman is at his best the flow to his innings is different. It is as smooth as a “TOP SCOTCH” you would not know how much you have “downed” so is the case with a batsman in top flight. Chin scored 28 off just 14 balls. That too after missing to connect the first 2 balls which I believe were terrible airy fairy shots. Dhanu-Ananth / Chin-Sid / Dilip in form this season, Bhaskar the rock,  Naga-Avi this is some batting we have, at our full strength we are a handful. There is one more guy whom we are unable to use at his full potential. Make no mistake and mark my words, Venki is a tremendous batsman, has all the shots, has the defense and the game to contribute lot more than the opportunities he has. I genuinely feel for the captain as he is unable to slip in Venki the batsmen in the lineup.

I will take this opportunity to welcome two new faces, young blood and “good looking” cricketers to our team. By good looking I mean the cricketing look, which is “KATTI” in telugu or in other words RAZOR SHARP looking young men. Venki now has competition when it comes to sharp “cricket look”. More about Dinesh and Bhanu in following segment on bowling.

Bowling: All the games this season, barring games against Middlesex and to an extent Indians we bowled brilliantly. Against Middlesex too we had them reeling at 29 for 3 and then a special hundred from one of their batsmen spoilt it for us. Against Indians we bowled too many wides and somehow were not switched on. Like in batting Ananth being a key, in our bowling we do very well when Sid is on song. Against Indians he was not on song and that showed in the result. Venki is bowling brilliantly this year and he is just unstoppable. You cannot score off him, if you take him for granted you are back in the hut. Yesterday Venki should have got 3 to 4 wickets but dint. Just pure bad luck, catches go down, or ball misses the stumps by a whisker or the bat edge is missed by coat of paint. But the pressure he builds from dot balls is immense, it gets batsmen out of their comfort zone, rather drives them into a desperate zone. That’s exactly what happened and like Manoj made most of the pressure from Venky last game, the rest of bowlers hunting for wickets got rich rewards.

A few difficult chances were put down, but the bowling was so good from Venki and Sid that these missed chances did not cost us much. The best and most endearing aspect of our opening spell was NO WIDES till the 9th over. When this happens you can bet your life and say the batting team is under severe pressure and wickets are just a matter of time. At drinks from 14 overs SGCC Jr. was 29 for 2 and that run rate chasing 224 was just not good enough.

Chinmay brought Dinesh and Bhanu our new comers into the attack. Dinesh has a smooth and lovely run up and action. He has massive potential to be a very good cricketer. The first look at him and you come up with the word “FIT” I observed while he was fielding he has good soft hands and makes fielding look easy on the eye. His bowls quick has a very good ability to vary length. Bhanu the other youngster is also fit and strong. He is deceptive in his pace, has a run up which disturbs the batsmen due the stutter. Bhanu has the best throwing arm I have seen in a long time. He threw flat from the boundary to the bowler end and the ball came back as if shot from a gun and thrown from an arm. At no stage SGCC was in the hunt for the runs, our bowlers kept a tight leash and with better fielding rather better catching effort we would have got SGCC for about 120. The younger legs in the field are motivating the rest of the team. Dinesh and Bhanu add a big factor to our fielding and older guys like me don’t want to be left too far behind and are going the extra yard to be effective in the field. This is good for the team. Young blood always brings freshness in a team, new energy levels and enthusiasm permeate through the team.

Chinmay came into bowl after observing wickets were not falling, despite all efforts. Chin is a wicket taking bowler, he bowls those gems in between the odd wides. But the ability to take wickets is Chin’s biggest strength. In a jiffy he had 3 batsmen out, clean bowling them. Chin bowled just 3 or 4 overs and gift wrapped the game in our favor. From then on it was a matter of time before we could wind down on a good day of cricket.
Chinmay wanted to check me out and see if it was just a bad day for me when I gave 20 runs in the only over I bowled for JECC 3 weeks back. I jumped at this opportunity. After that dreadful over 3 weeks back, I felt like a jilted lover. A beautiful woman asks you for a date and you screw up by throwing up moment you meet her, that’s how I felt after giving 20 runs in the one and only over I bowled for JECC. Dilip offers the ball to me and I blew the opportunity to bowl for JECC. But yesterday was different. Chinmay gave me heads up during a break, I called Naga to a side and bowled a few to get my arm lose. I also gave a lot of thought to what went wrong the previous time I bowled. I was ok in the nets and knew I can’t be that bad. I was releasing the ball from the arm as against my hand. Silently I was praying for one more “DATE WITH BALL” and that moment came. I grabbed it this time and released the ball better. I was rewarded with Dhanu taking a catch a sweeper cover, and I bowled the last man to give me figures 2 wickets in one over. What a nice way to finish the day.

A wonderful day of cricket for JECC, 2 new faces and fit bodies, Ananth –Dhanu Chinmay-Sid and the openers all fired in batting. Bowling was terrific, spirit was great. Dhanu as always chipped in with 2 wickets, batted brilliantly (took 3 catches too) Chinmay got 3 wickets and key runs when he batted, led very well good field placements and utilization of bowling resources. Pavan bowled a bouncer which we normally don’t do, that was such a good bouncer the batsmen sought a helmet immediately.  Avi-Naga kept wickets brilliantly. No byes at all and good stops on wides. Dhanu’s eagle shrieks were heard all afternoon, inviting the big birds to watch the eagles put up a cricketing show. Keep going eagles, we need a winning streak to match last year’s efforts.

Match Report: JECC vs NJBarons 05/31/2015 @ Far Hills

Match Report by

Ravi Suri

JECC lost to NJBarons. Batting first, NJ Barons were all out for 79 in 26.4 overs and JECC got all out for 76 runs in 27 overs.

Games like these are gut wrenching. It takes a long time and huge amount of determination to come out of the depression. Losing by 3 runs and not able to chase 80 questions the cricketing abilities of all the X1 involved. Its collective failure. No one person to be blamed and no one person to be excused. Its very tough to report such a failure. I request everyone to take my comments, views and suggestions in positive light. This is not meant to be finger pointing but an effort to make better cricketers out of us.

Man of the Match: Manoj for a excellent spell of 8 superb overs taking 5 wickets and restricting Barons to 79 runs.

Bowling:
Yster (Venkatesh) continues to amaze and is now so consistent that it will be a surprise to see him bowl a bad ball. He is bowling a most impressive and consistent line. He was at his best again, moved the ball and in an out. The best part is he seems to have hit the ideal pace which enables him control the movement and have a good line going. Nothing down the leg side, nothing to leave outside the off. He is at the batsman all the time. He and Sid bowled a brilliant spell no wides in first six overs. We have Barons in trouble at 6 for 2 in 6 overs. A dream start. Dilip was awesome with his field placements. He is very observant and makes good moves in changing angles of the fielders catching positions. Such moves stem from deep insight of the game and watching a lot of cricket.

Sid bowled well too and is getting into his stride with every passing game. The surprise packet was Manoj who bowled a dream spell. He swung and cut the ball and had the batsman clueless with his movement. A five for is not a common occurrence in a 8 over spell. You have to be good through your spell to achieve this. Manoj was brilliant and reaped rich rewards. 4 of his 5 wickets were to unplayable balls and would have got most good batsmen out. Bhaskar is a cricketer who continues to impress with his all-round skills.  He kept wickets as if he has been doing it for many years.

There is something special about this guy. 4 of my 5 match reports thus far mention his name in specific reference. This shows he is doing something special almost every game. He kept wickets very well and showed us another side. When you get a team all out for 79 you cannot fault the fielding or bowling. That said we gave away 18 wides which is still too many for a score of 79, that too we bowled just 26 overs. We dropped 3 catches. If we need to win these are areas in the fielding / bowling dept we need to control.

Batting:
The most depressing aspect of this game was our batting. If you cannot chase 80 against a reasonable time like Barons, we need to hang our heads in shame. Their bowling was disciplined not threatening. All 11 players can have 11 different views on why the batting failed. End of the day each of us needs to look inward and see how we got out and what wrong we did. Without doubt the biggest worry and blame goes to opening partnerships of our season. You cannot be zero for 2 in a chase.

Batting is letting down the serious efforts of our bowlers. Bhaskar is setting an example; play time. Openers need to step up or step down. I mean myself in this context. I strongly believe Dhanu is the best opener we have he should not be disturbed. Give him an very extended run. In fact just don’t meddle with him. I am so lost to comment on our batting failure that I will take the silence is golden route and not comment further. Bhaskar did everything he can, Dilip played so very well till he got tempted after we reached our first milestone of 16 overs and 33 runs. My hats off to Srinath, he played perfect # 11 game. We were so near yet so far. I feel for Bhaskar he almost won it for us.

Comments: We are matured cricketers who need to do soul search and come up with better performance. I am hitting the nets this week, anyone wants to join please let me know. I will be using bowling machine, if anyone can join most welcome. My mind and heart and not allowing me to come up with a better report. I can imagine rest of you must be hurting as well. Only positive thing can be when we hurt we will work on improving. If we do not hurt then stop playing this great game. Shan seems a very promising cricketer. We have a good team building up, we need a motivating and match winning innings soon from someone. Ananth, Dhanu, Sid, Chinmay we look up to one of you to provide motivation.
