Match Report: Eagles vs NJ Barons, 06/10/12 @ Far Hills

Looking at yesterdays & previous performances of NJ Barons, they seem to be a very strong team and beating them convincingly definitely is a milestone for us. I am proud of our team’s performance. Let’s keep it going !!!  NJ Barons CC won the toss and chose to bat. I and Lahiru opened the bowling, started off well getting their opener in the 4th ball of my 1st over. Courtesy of Lahiru, took an excellent catch at mid-off ( J ). All the bowlers bowled a very tight line and length troubling their top order batsmen and sending them back in single digit scores.

Shakti was on fire with the ball, an amazing in-dipping Yorker took the middle stump of one of their best batsman who has been scoring 50s in almost every game he played so far. Shakti’s spell was unplayable. I am sure he’ll be devastating if he was given the new ball. Chinmay and Dhanu bowled well as always. Nagarjun was excellent behind the wickets. It would not be fair, if I do not mention about their #4 batsman (Pranav). Full credit to him for playing an excellent innings (62 - Not out) under pressure, He helped their team to put up a fighting total of 154.

He showed lot of resistance and patience in spite of wickets falling at the other end. His shots neat mostly scoring behind cover, point and gully areas. If it were not him, we would have packed them up for less than 80 runs. He gave only one chance when their total was in 120s. But a total of 154 in a league game must be expected. I guess this is their lowest score this season. They scored 200 plus in almost all of their previous games.

Requiring on 4 runs an over, our batting was spot on in the chase. Lucky and Dhanu opened the innings.  Dhanu started off well with nice cover drives…scoring boundary, singles and doubles ..but was unfortunate to get our off a very sharp catch in the slips (we would normally see such a catch only in internal games). Ananth as usual was impressive with his selective cover drive boundaries, they tried to trouble him with short and raising balls going off of his shoulders and a couple over his head. He played them with ease, hooking them for boundary and also huge sixes over mid-wicket which almost fell on the roof structure at our ground by the parking area.

Chinmay just picked up his form from where he left off last game. He thoroughly entertained us with his batting…very convincing sixes and fours. Lucky did well supporting both Ananth and Chimnay in putting up much needed partnerships. I always knew Vishal had potential to bat up the order, but was waiting for the right time to try him in the top. He was promoted to #5, played very sensibly rotating the strike and giving Chinmay most of the strike who was taking on their bowlers.

Vishal and Nagarjun got us close to victory leaving Dilip and I around 30 runs in 9 overs to win. Their bowling was strong and main strike pace bowlers were back on the attack. Dilp & I played cautiously making sure we don’t lose a wicket at that stage scoring singles and doubles. Dilip was very patient and finished the innings for us with the winning boundary.


Our strategy of saving good batsman like Dilip and Nagarjun for the middle order worked well.  Chasing is never easy and we won the game convincingly. Overall, a great team effort and a good win against an impressive & a strong bowling attack.

With this victory, we made it to the top of the points-table in our division. Let’s try and occupy the top seat for the remainder of the season.  Special thanks to Prabhakar for coming over to the ground and supporting the team. I think the Chicken-wings & ice coffee during the lunch break did the trick for our batting  J . Thank you Naga.

Match Report: Eagles vs Brunswick Braves, 05/20/2012 @ Tall timbers park

This is my short match report; First of all congratulations to everybody on the win, it’s good to be 3-1.


Summary:Intone eagles won by 50+ run. We batted first and put up 165/10, we were all out with 5 balls to spare. Brunswick Braves gave a good fight, but we got them all out for 115.

Batting:Lucky and Sid opened the innings for us, but Sid got out early to an excellent ball. Then Lucky and Ananth put up a great partnership of 100 or close to a hundred. (I don’t have the score book with me as I write this)  Ananth scored his first 50 for the season and Lucky added 39. After lucky and Ananth got out every one chipped in to put up 165. After the great start we got from Lucky and Ananth we were looking at a score of 200+, but unfortunately we couldn’t capitalize on the start we got.Out middle order batting has to step up, we don’t need 50s or 100s but 20-30 runs for each player can easily get us to a winning score.

Bowling: Sid and Lahiru opened the bowling for us; Sid bowled an unplayable first spell with 3 wickets. Lahiru supported Sid well from the other end.  After early 3 wickets we started leaking runs. Myself and Mayank came in as the first and second change. Though we slowed down the runs we couldn’t get a break through. That’s until we got a questionable run out on a direct hit by me.  From there were able to take wickets in regular intervals to take the game away from them. After couple of wickets by Mayank and Ananth, Sid came back to finish the tail. Sid got 5 for 20. Fielding As always Bala was excellent behind the wicket, he definitely cut down 15-20 runs easily on our wides down the leg side. Apart from that Sid took an excellent catch to dismiss their set batsmen. We did have couple of missed chances, but were definitely better than last week. It was a great win, but I think we definitely improve on these areas;

Extras – We need to cut down on wides Middle order batting – We have to step up here, like I said before we don’t really need 50s or 100s, just 20-30 from each would do great. At the end, it’s all about the partnerships, and we all know other teams will always gift us runs on extras.

Fielding –We need to get better at catching, we can get away by dropping because these weren’t close matches. Catches will decide matches.  Dhanushka

Match Report: Eagles vs HRCC, 05/13/12 @ Far hills

We lost the game to a good batting display from HRCC.

HRCC won the toss and batted first, put up 243/9 in 40 overs. We failed chasing and fell for 105 or so in 29 overs. HRCC batsmen (the opener and their #5) outplayed our bowling. In spite of losing 3 quick wickets in the 1st session for 57  (at the 1st 14 over break) , they played very sensibly …just pushing for singles and doubles finding  gaps and saved their wickets till the 30 over to accelerate the score to 243/9. Of course, we let their batsmen get away with a couple of dropped catches.

Though we had a strong batting line-up, we collapsed for around 105. Dhanu batted well opening the innings (27) in spite of cramping in the middle of his innings.   No doubt we have a good bowling attack, but I think we are still missing a genuine spinner. May be we would have restricted them to lower total, had I tried Lucky as a spinner. But lots of things come to mind after the fact.  We had a decent batting line-up capable of chasing that total, but it didn’t work this time.

We took some stunning catches during our 1st league game against Majestic, but dropped a couple of easy catches during this game. It happens; we win some and lose some, that’s the nature of the game. Nothing to worry about,  If we had to lose a game..this is it and its now behind us.  I am confident we’ll improve, perform much better and get back on winning stride in next games.

Match report: JECC vs Warriors @ Mercer County park, 07/11

JECC lost to Warriors by 7 wickets.

Batting first, JECC scored 216 all out in 39.5 overs and Warriors easily chased down the score losing only 3 wickets and 4 overs to go. Durale forest scored 100 and Anoop scored 50 in their chase.

Batting: Karthik and I opened the innings to a reception of short pitched deliveries one of which hit Karthik on the shoulder causing a bad bruise. Karthik had to retire early and Ananth stepped in to face the music. The bowling continued in a similar vein and we were facing a barrage of fast short pitched bowling fro both ends by their Caribbean bowlers Shane and Durale. After negotiating a tough spell, Ananth and I picked up on the pitched up deliveries and good running. We picked up the scoring rate without any additional damage, managing 65 runs for the opening partnership in 15 overs.

After the initial spell, the slow and very slow bowlers came on. Ananth was in his groove, scoring freely and was looking set for a big score when he fell caught in the deep off a tempting delivery by Anoop. Karthik came on again with a bruised shoulder and a bandage, and both of us settled down to punish the spinners. After a couple of big overs, I was run out for 34 in a mix up. Suneel and Lucky were soon out too and we were facing a similar collapse situation.

Nagarjun came in to play some quiet overs but settled down soon after. He rotated the strike well and built a 60+ run partnership with Karthik, who was fighting on bravely and was scoring off classy whips and drives all around the ground. Karthik got out for a well made 50. Sekhar stepped in together with Naga, raised the tempo with some big shots. He rotated the strike well and hit the loose balls for boundaries with impeccable timing. Dhanu, Mital, Muraliand Vishal gave support and we were able to cross 200 easily. Sekhar was left not out for 34 and we were all out for 216 with a ball to spare.

Bowling: Mital and Suneel started off well, but couldn’t get the early breakthrough we were looking for. Anoop meanwhile started to play some big shots and Murali was brought on to look for a wicket. Mital, on the other end was unplayable. He was the only bowler from our side who bowled six overs on the trot in severe heat, looking threatening all the time. A brilliant caught and bowled from Mital got us the first wicket. Then came Durale and together with Anoop, they played and scored easily anything we bowled at them. With a runner to go, things got annoying as the wicket wouldn’t come by until a 150+ run partnership went by. Anoop and Durale completed their fifties and were looking to just coast to the target.
Vishal and Sekhar bowled some tight overs between them, resulting in a couple of wickets, both off Vishal. That wasn’t enough as the runs kept flowing and Warriors managed to get to the target in 37 overs, with Durale getting his 100 too off the winning runs.

Verdict: There was nothing much we could do. A very hard fought loss. Brave efforts by Karthik and Mital were standouts in our batting and bowling. We gave our hearts out in the field and in the bowling, but it just wasn’t our day. Batting was excellent. The go-slow game plan by warriors especially in the heat frustrated us even more.
